Abstract
The introduction of differential reflectivity (Z//D//R) as a second measurable in S-band radar observations of rainfall has improved the estimation of rainfall rate compared to the conventional Z-R relationship method. Z//D//R is the difference (in dB) between the reflectivity factors at horizontal (Z//H) and vertical (Z//V) polarizations. It is desirable to use this technique at C-band frequencies because of the smaller antenna size requirements relative to S-band. However, at C-band the radar signal can experience significant attenuation in rainfall. Attenuation may lead to considerable errors in the estimation of rainfall rate by radar. The authors demonstrate these effects and the possibility of correcting them by using radar measurements. The approach is illustrated by simulating radar measurements using disdrometer measurements of raindrop size distributions.
