Abstract
Recently, it has been claimed that rational choice theory provides the best framework for understanding how oppression is reproduced and maintained over time, particularly through the mechanism of inducing individuals to participate in their own oppression. This paper subjects this claim to critical scrutiny, drawing on a detailed discussion of the example of marital power to argue that rational choice theory does not and, indeed, cannot fully explain how individuals are compelled to participate in their own oppression.
