N2 - A family of ionic liquids that react hypergolically with white fuming nitric acid has recently been discovered. This family is based upon the dicyanamide anion, N(CN)2-. An experimental study of the reaction of sodium dicyanamide with nitric acid was conducted to add to the understanding of an ignition mechanism proposed by Chambreau et al. Sodium dycanamide was used to avoid contributions to products from the cation of the fuel. Gas-phase products were studied using mircroprobe sampling and mass spectrometric analysis. In addition, a chemical assay was used to test for the presence of dinitrobiuret, the key intermediate in the proposed mechanism.
