Abstract
In order to understand the reaction behavior of KCN in the blast furnace, molten KCN samples contained in graphite crucibles were reacted with CO-N//2 gas mixtures of varying composition and temperature similar to those encountered in the alkali recycle zone. The melts were reacted for various periods of time, and the partially reacted samples were anlyzed for total nitrogen, carbon, potassium, and KCN contents. These data and the results of X-ray diffraction studies indicated the presence of K//2O and DCN in the reacted samples. The standard free energy changes for the reaction between KCN and CO-N//2 gas mixtures and the cyanide and the oxide capacities of the K-C-N-O melts were determined from the experimental data. The experimentally determined thermodynamic data are compared with the values in the literature.
