Abstract

India’s National Education Policy 2020 recommends essential steps to help the country meet its 21st-century developmental goals. The policy seeks to significantly transform India’s higher education through a multi-pronged set of recommendations that include (1) an education system that is deeply rooted in Indian ethos; (2) a focus on skill-based education; (3) transformation of organisational structure, curriculum, regulatory ecosystem, and institutional culture; (4) provision of an equitable and inclusive education for all; and (5) an emphasis on being global. The nuanced implications of these recommendations are woven throughout the policy document and require repeated, careful readings to be captured. Hence, there is a need to sift through the policy document and reorganise the recommendations into a comprehensive and accessible list so that various stakeholders can be conversant with the recommendations, appreciate their significance, and devise effective strategies to implement them. Such an exercise also highlights the interconnectedness of the various elements of the policy and thus underscores its holistic nature.
