Abstract

The use of the dynamic rotations per minute (DRPM) technique to control speed in server disk arrays for power management is discussed. The DRPM technique provides significant savings in the input\output system power consumption without degrading the performance of the system. A control policy is used to exploit the DRPM capability to save energy. The control policy uses a two-level feedback driven algorithm that involves both the disk-arrays controller and the constituent disks. The issues involved with the design of a DRPM hard disks are also presented.
