Abstract

The building and renovation of two science branch libraries within larger University building projects, Biological Sciences and Engineering, provides an interesting case study of remarkably different experiences and approaches at the same institution during the same time period. Successful planning of library facilities is described to be more than spatial work. The article outlines approaches and experiences including strategic planning, effects of changing disciplines, political maneuvering, and persistent attention to detail. A set of principles for surviving building projects of this nature is presented as well as lessons learned.
