Resolve, reputation, and foreign policy

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the current state of research on resolve and reputation in foreign policy and how it has evolved. It points to three developments in the study of resolve and reputation that have created opportunities for more input from the foreign policy analysis (FPA) perspective: (1) greater focus on domestic politics, (2) greater focus on leaders, and (3) greater focus on individual psychology. The chapter also considers how an analysis of these aspects of resolve and reputation can open up a dialogue between FPA and other disciplines. The chapter ends by suggesting possible new directions for future research in this area and how FPA can contribute.
