Abstract

Approximately 25 years ago in On the Shoulders of Giants, Steen (1990) articulated the richness of mathematics as he identifi ed key elements of the fi eld, including not only quantity but also uncertainty. I mention these two aspects of mathematics to keep quantity in perspective and to preface two observations about mathematics as a STEM fi eld and about STEM learning, teaching, and curriculum.
