Abstract
This article has been retracted: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal (https://www.elsevier.com/about/policies/article-withdrawal). This article has been retracted at the request of the Editors-in-Chief. Concerns about the integrity of the data presented in this article and about undisclosed conflicts of interest were raised by a researcher. In particular, Figure 3 raised significant concern. The corresponding author was asked to provide data that could validate this figure, but the information subsequently provided did not support the claims made. First, the half-maps that were used to estimate the resolution in the original Advanced Materials paper have never been deposited, despite repeated requests that have been made. Second, the map shown is pure noise, and contains no features expected for a protein capsid. Third, the model supplied by the authors has almost no correlation with the deposited map, despite claims that the map:model comparison showed a 3.2 Å resolution. Fourth, the images provided in Figure 3a do not show any diffusion or Brownian motion of the virions in liquid as stated, but instead show drift of the microscope stage. Further to the journal's investigation, the Editors were contacted by Penn State University recommending retraction of the article following an investigation, conducted by three independent experts from outside the university, which concluded that there are serious data integrity concerns relating to volume and model in the article. As such, the journal has lost confidence in the published review and its conclusions. Apologies are offered to the readers of the journal.
