Abstract

Development of control software has long been a bottleneck in the implementation of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). This problem is attributable directly to the lack of standard models for FMS control system development. This paper addresses this problem and presents the concepts of reusable software as possible solutions. Specifically, three main applications of reusable software are described: a scaleable FMS control architecture, automatically generated control software, and object-orientated programming of equipment components. An application of the reusable software concepts to the development of a control system for a full-scale FMS is presented.
