note = "Funding Information: The third challenge we faced was obtaining sufficient funding to conduct the entire project. While we articulated the entire program of macro-and microlevel research in our initial proposal, we were unable to obtain sufficient funding to complete all of the work from a single source. In 2001, we received a competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture{\textquoteright}s National Research Initiative to examine the social integration and well-being of older in-migrants to rural retirement communities. Research on rural retirement destinations themselves was supported through our participation in USDA multi-state research project W-1001, Rural Population Change, and the four in-depth case studies were funded by a small grant from Cornell{\textquoteright}s Polson Institute for Global Development.",
