Abstract
The impact of semiconductors continues to grow deeper as they expand into new areas of application. A number of different innovative uses of semiconductors can be defined depending on how one sees the field. Semiconductor LED-based bulbs are set to eventually replace not only incandescent and fluorescent but compact fluorescent bulbs as well. Silicon-based micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) form another class of devices that moved semiconductors into previously unexplored territories. Organic electronics and photonics represent yet another area that came into existence only because some organic materials were discovered to display semiconductor properties. Geometrically confined semiconductor material nanosystems are also being introduced that display distinct physical properties very different than the same materials in three-dimensional, or bulk, configuration.
