Abstract

At the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), we are involved in an extensive research effort with chlorinated dioxins. This effort includes both method development and the synthesis of various dioxin isomers for use as analytical standards. To provide a working environment in which this dioxin synthesis can be conducted safely, we constructed a specialized Chemical Toxicant Laboratory (CTL). Safety procedures specific for the CTL at CDC, are presented here in detail as a possible model for others handling, or contemplating the handling of, dioxins or other chemical toxicants.
