The use of waste foundry sand from Auburn foundry Inc in the construction of two embankments on County Route 206 for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is described. Studies were conducted to evaluate the environmental safety and toxicity of the sand. Instruments were placed in the embankments to monitor environmental and geotechnical performance of the fill materials during and after construction. The sand was shown to have comparable strength to normal sand. Using the waste foundry sand, INDOT saved nearly $150 000 in material costs and the foundry saved $1 million in disposal costs.
