Abstract

This paper describes a study conducted for a manufacturer of specialty steel products including steel coil. The purpose of the work was to improve the performance of the company's hot strip rolling mill, which was a production bottleneck. Two opportunities for improvement were identified: capital expenditures to upgrade the mill and better scheduling of products through the mill. This paper describes an interactive computer aided procedure which can generate schedules satisfying several objectives.
