Abstract

This paper describes the results of a study seeking to determine whether or not there exists a science librarian hiring crisis and examines the background of librarians actually being hired for openings as compared to the qualifications originally stated in the job announcements. The study revealed that while difficulties exist in obtaining adequate applicant pools for science positions libraries are able to adequately hire persons who have either academic background in the sciences or science library experience. A review of the literature will be used to examine the study's results and to discuss alternative strategies for filling positions requiring specialized backgrounds.
