Abstract

Simulated agricultural runoff, amended with sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus, was run through an experimental sedimentation basin. Perforated risers created 3-day and 1-day detention times. Effluent concentrations were monitored for total suspended sediments and various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus. The results indicated that approximately 94% of the sediment, 76% of the nitrogen, and 52% of the phosphorus that were added to the inflow were removed by the basin. The 3-day treatment removed more sediments, nitrogen and phosphorus than the 1-day treatment.
