Abstract

The mechanism of formation of the monovariant twin structure in Ni-V alloys during the transformation path from the disordered f.c.c. Al parent phase to the two-phase Al+DO 22 region has been studied. A 2D model of the cubic-to-tetragonal transformation, based on the Onsager kinetic diffusional equation, is proposed. Our computer simulations demonstrate that strain-induced interactions between the coherent DO 22 precipitates lead to the coarsening of a single orientational variant out of three originally precipitated in the material. These simulation results are in good agreement with TEM observations on a Ni-19.5at.%V alloy.
