Abstract
A discussion about the self-defocusing and optical limiting of nanowatt continuous wave (CW) laser and image processing at μWatt/cm2 intensity with nematic liquid crystals was presented. Using liquid crystal films doped with photocharge producing dyes, the feasibility of optical limiting of long pulse - cw lasers at nanowatt power, and clamped transmission of ≪ 1μJ was demonstrated. The incoherent-coherent image conversion capability with optical intensity in the μWatt/cm2 was also demonstrated.
