Self-starting phase conjugation with liquid crystals

Abstract

In this presentation, I will describe how these thermal and orientational fluctuations may be fruitfully utilized in some noise initiating self-starting coherent nonlinear optical devices. In particular, our studies have shown that large transient two-wave mixing mediated beam amplification effects can be obtained [2] with moderate power laser pulses in the millisecond or shorter time scale by employing the large thermal index gradient. With the use of special optical configuration, we demonstrate that it is possible to construct a so-called self-starting optical phase conjugator.
