Abstract

Learning and memory enable animals to adapt their behavior to suit their current situation – thus learning and memory promote flexible behavior. For many years, it was believed that fish were limited to fairly basic learning and memory abilities – making simple associations between a particular kind of action and an outcome. A wealth of evidence now reveals some fish to have remarkably sophisticated learning and memory abilities. Fish have specific areas in their brain that specialize in processing different forms of learning.
