Abstract

Utilizing current research in the sociology of education, this article provides a synthesis of the existing literature on US colleges and universities' roles in producing a civically engaged citizenry who can function in a diverse, pluralistic society highlighting research that focuses on systematic attention to educating students for such a society. This article highlights research that addresses how US colleges are preparing students to live and work in an increasingly complex and diverse democracy and what sensibilities global citizens should be developing by focusing specifically on diversity and service learning.
