Abstract

A modem six-Axis WEDM system is capable of producing more complex geometry than 2D. 21/2D or mled surface paits. The rotational axis on the six-Axis WEDM allows the machine to rotate a part while using the cutting wire to fabricate the part. However, limited process planning automation for six-Axis WEDM requires significant process planning time and effort. Even available commercial Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software is facing difficulties to produce process planning for six-Axis WEDM automatically. A method of determining the setup plans for six-Axis WEDM is presented in this paper. The semp plan includes the number of setups and rotational axis planning for six- Axis WEDM. The tangent visibility analysis results in our former research are used to guide the setup and intermediate coordinate systems are defined in order to classify the tangent visibility results. A greedy algorithm is developed to determine the optimal set of intermediate coordinate systems and setup orientations for six-Axis WEDM.
