Abstract

Few transformations in family lives that are taking place around the world are as rapid or profound as those involving sexual orientation, marriage and parenthood. This chapter takes a global perspective to consider the many variations in law and policy relevant to lesbian and gay parents and their children. These include variations in legal recognition for relationships of same-sex couples (e.g. marriage or civil unions), legal regulation of assisted reproductive technology, and legal regulation of adoption by lesbian and gay adults. In all these areas, significant changes are emerging around the globe on a regular basis. In the context of shifting social environments, innovative social science research highlights the challenges faced by families, as well as positive developments among children of lesbian and gay parents.
