Abstract
Estimates suggest that older inmates, defined as those aged 50 and older, will account for more than one third of the total prison population by 2030. Although some research is available regarding older adults in prison (e.g., more than half have a psychiatric disorder) and sexuality in prison (e.g., AIDS is diagnosed six times more often in prison populations), virtually no information exists regarding sexuality and sexual health among older prisoners. This chapter is designed to review the existing literature and provide information about older prisoners' characteristics, their unique age and gender related risks for sexual assault, dysfunction, and STDs including HIV/AIDS, and correctional facility policies including the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Information also will be provided about controversial aspects of care including the treatment of erectile dysfunction and the provision of condoms, release of older prisoners via compassionate release, and older sexual offenders. Finally, this chapter will highlight the need for effective public policy and pose potential areas for research exploration.
