Abstract

This chapter will explore the various challenges, innovations, and explorations experienced by the d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community around sexuality. Despite audist expectations surrounding sex and intimacy, having a hearing loss or deafness is not inherently a barrier to communication during intimate times, and there are many ways that needs and wants can be communicated to a partner(s). Indeed, exploring what works best between partners can be an affirming bonding experience. This chapter dives deeply into the reasons that drive individuals’ choices to navigate communication, consent, and pleasure in these moments, and how we can support d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (HoH) individuals when it comes to discussion of consent, sexual exploration, and affirming experiences.
