Abstract
Rams are seasonal breeders that have large testes in comparison with other mammalian species. Testicle size is a good indication of a ram’s sperm producing ability and varies with season, body condition and mating activity. A breeding soundness evaluation prior to ram introduction to ewes is critical to assess a ram’s breeding capacity. In a seasonal breeding system, a ram can breed up to 100 ewes per year, whereas in an artificial insemination program, one ram can be used to inseminate thousands of ewes in a breeding season.
