Abstract
Amphiphilic pyridinium polymers with pendant alkyl tails are shown to be strongly biocidal towards bacteria, fungi and viruses if the alkyl tail length and percentage of N-alkylation are correctly chosen. Biocidal composites can be easily synthesised, consisting of these polymers with embedded silver bromide. These composites can kill both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.
