Abstract
A phenomenological model, termed "the dynamic hindered-settling model, " was used to evaluate the performance of a hindered-settling column when processing fine anthracite refuse. The model parameters were based in part on test conditions used in a previous study evaluating the use of a laboratory hindered-settling column for recovering -1.2 mm anthracite from refuse material. Simulations were carried out to assess column performance as a function of operating and design variables, including teeter water rate, bed height, column height, and solids feed rate. Partition curves with corresponding parameters for density separation were used to compare the simulation results. The simulations showed that good separations are possible, depending on the material properties of the feed, and the design and operating conditions of the column.
