Abstract
Microwave sintering has been widely used for ceramics especially those which are dielectrically lossy but not for powder metallurgy components as it is known that metals reflect microwaves. However, in the present investigation, commercial copper steel pinion gears have been successfully sintered for the first time using our modified microwave system. A 2 kW commercial microwave oven with 2.45 GHz multimode cavity was suitably modified and an insulation-susceptor package designed to sinter the pressed green gear compacts. The sintering temperatures employed were 1140, 1260 and 1300°C for 5-min. and 20-min. each in flowing forming as atmosphere. The microwave sintered pinion gears were evaluated for physical and mechanical properties and were found to be as good as conventional sintered gears.
