Abstract
Seven holes were drilled at Site 645 providing an almost complete record of sedimentation from early Miocene to the present day. The sequence has a pronounced terrigenous character with a sparse biotic fauna. Dropstones are abundant and appear as early as 3.4 Ma (1.0 Ma earlier than in corresponding N Atlantic sediments) and granules suggesting at least seasonal sea ice appear as early as late Miocene. There is evidence of strong, contour-following currents in early Miocene-Pliocene which were a result of influxes of warmer N Atlantic water into the basin, suggesting southward flow of Arctic water masses to the Labrador Sea. It is possible that the lack of preserved planktonic biota could be explained by diagenesis of the sediments.-A.W.Hall
