N2 - The paper presents a couple of methods for estimating the field-orientation angle and speed of the induction motor (IM), discusses the errors that occur at low speed due to non-ideal integration and parameter variation and presents solutions to improve the estimation accuracy based on sliding mode control concepts. While the field orientation angle of the IM can be obtained without knowledge of the rotor parameters; the speed estimate is inherently affected by an inaccurate rotor time constant. In addition, at low speed, estimates are affected by non-ideal integration. The paper compares a few flux/speed estimators and proposes solutions to improve the accuracy. The mathematics presented is supported with simulations and experiments.
