Abstract
Soot source identification by laser derivatization (SSILD) is based on the premise that soots originating from different combustion sources differ in their nanostructure, owing to the variation in formation conditions. Combustion conditions-temperature, pressure, fuel, fuel-To-Airratio, fuel-Air mixing-Are specific to each source and differ between sources. Thus, soot produced from different sources will reflect its formation conditions. HRTEM imaging in concert with image analysis algorithms is used to quantify nanostructure parameters. Contrasting nanostructure can identify the soot origin when sufficiently distinct. Where similar nanostructure or more often, poorly contrasted nanostructure is observed, subtle differences may be magnified by laser derivatization to enhance lamellae recognition and quantification.
