Abstract

New measurements of threshold soot index (TSI) and TSI data from the literature have been combined to develop a set of recommended TSI values for use in formulating surrogate fuel mixtures for JP-8. Several binary mixtures of candidate surrogate compounds were tested in order to verify the mixture rule for the TSI. The mixtures were also used to derive values of TSI for iso-cetane and to verify the value for 1-methylnaphthalene. Lastly, several surrogate mixtures of three or four components were tested to see how well their TSI's matched their predicted values, and to show that a target value of TSI can be maintained when components and composition change.
