Abstract

Past abuse and high-grading have reduced value, but growth exceeds harvest and the potential with more intensive management is great. The pulp and paper industry will account for the greatest future use of southern hardwoods. This study reports the biomass, nutrient and energy content of these forests and the implications of improved utilization and management.
