Abstract
A number of space tether activities that have been successful in 2005 are discussed. The Multi-Application Survivable Tether (MAST) Experiment is being delivered and is set to launch by the end of the year or in early 2007. MAST will validate survivability models of multistranded tether systems and will deploy a 1-km long survivable tether structure between two picosatellites. MISSE was mounted externally on the space station Quest airlock and exposed several hundred materials to space for some years, including several candidate tether materials. The Momemtum Transfer-Electrodynamic Reboost (MXER) Tether project achievements in 2005 include the development of a robust catch mechanism and the development of a fast, extremely accurate orbital propagation/prediction algorithm. The tether cable technology can also be used as a risk mitigation method for robotic rovers in deep lunar crater exploration, allowing full access across steep, unpredictable slopes.
