Abstract

The Young Engineers's Satellite (YES2) mission has received the deployment of a 32-km tether structure. YES2 is developed by Delta-Utec for the European Space Agency and launched on September 14, 2007. The deployment of the tether involved releasing a 6-kg spherical reentry capsule into a reentry trajectory. The deployment provided valuable information about deployment measurements, GPS data, and sub-satellite dynamics information. The deployment was a two-stage process and capsule was released near the point of maximum swing velocity. Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology is developing 'Fortissimo', which is a suborbital test of orbital-motion-limited (OML) bare-wire anode current collection with application to electrodynamic tether propulsion. The Fortissimo is expected to be launched in 2009 by using a S520 sound rocket.
