Abstract

In this paper, we describe a method for estimating the number of degrees of freedom needed to adequately model nonlinear structural systems. We apply the method to the study of chaotic oscillations of a 10 degree-of-freedom impact oscillator. The technique, which overcomes some of the shortcomings of fractal dimension estimates, uses spatial correlation data, and is called the proper orthogonal expansion method. It has previously been applied to the study of turbulent fluid flows: our goal is to adapt this technique to the analysis of nonlinear structural vibrations.
