Abstract

We present spatial mapping of fluorescence and Raman spectra across grains and grain boundaries in a transparent NdYAG laser material with 5 at% Nd- doping using con focal scanning optical microscopy. These signals do not show any significant spectral shifts, indicating exceptional compositional uniformity in the bulk and grain boundaries. Changes in the intensity of Raman and fluorescent signals between grains and grain boundaries are observed, arising primarily from scattering at the grain boundaries both in the interior and the surface of the ceramic.
