Abstract

By far the largest and most diffuse bloc of forestland in the northeastern and southeastern United States is owned and managed by small woodlot owners (Table 28.1), of whom <10% own forestlands large enough (>200 ha) to encompass a typical deer home range (Table 28.2). These owners have limited tenure on the land (generally less than 20 years) and may have goals that are not affected by deer impact, or they may not recognize that deer can affect their goals.
