Abstract

This short work serves an introduction for Explorations in Media Ecology’s first special issue on artificial intelligence (AI). AI work is nothing new in the field, and the article begins by overviewing some of the conversations from the media ecology lead voices on AI, including Postman, Ong and McLuhan. After, the article attempts to guide readers to an understanding of AI through a media ecological lens, concluding that generative AI (GenAI) tools are media. The article ends by giving a brief overview of the articles that have been selected for the special issue.
