Abstract

Screw-based dimmable compact fluorescent lamps (SD-CFLs) are promoted as alternatives to incandescent lamps. This paper investigates the performance of SD-CFLs over their dimming range - including luminous flux output, colorimetric quantities, and electrical characteristics - and compares these data against the performance of incandescent lamps. The performance of SD-CFLs differs from that of the incandescent lamps they are meant to replace in several important ways, including their colour appearance, colour rendering properties, and dimming range. These and other attributes that might inhibit the widespread application of current SD-CFLs are discussed.
