Abstract

It has been recognized for several years that erythropoiesis and red cell survival can be influenced by exercise in a variety of ways, such as in sports anemia. This article approaches this topic from the historic perspective and outlines the current major theories regarding the cause of a suboptimal hemoglobin in the athlete. In addition, measures that may be needed to assess the cause of an anemia in this setting are outlined, and therapeutic alternatives are proposed when indicated.
