Abstract

Due to the convective nature of the Eckhaus instability in oscillatory media there exists a conventively unstable wavenumber band in the Benjamin-Feir unstable region. This appears to explain, at least qualitatively, some features of spatiotemporal chaos found recently in the Ginzburg-Landau theory.
