Abstract
No continuous trends toward progressively negative del O18 values downhole were found at site 398. C isotope values show more consistent trends, and except for a number of values in the L Cretaceous section that are isotopically light due to diagenetic effects, may reflect original variations in the C isotope composition of the ocean reservoir. Significant isotopic fluctuations occur near the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary and in the U Paleocene section. Only a slight cooling at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary is evidenced by benthic and planktonic foraminifers. -from Authors
