Abstract
In a bipolar birefringent nonlinear medium, such as nematic liquid crystals, stationary degenerate two-wave mixing between a weak probe beam and a strong pump beam can occur. This leads to strong amplification of the probe beam. In our analytical calculations, the general conditions for observing these effects and specific conditions pertaining to nematic liquid crystals are explicitly described.
