Abstract
The continuum theory of partially fluidized flows was applied to the quantitative description of granular friction. A discontinuous transition from the stock slip to the stationary motion was found. The friction force-plate velocity phase loop characterizing skip events was reproduced. the structure of the granular flow underneath the plate during slip was also described. The theory was compared with two-dimensional soft particle molecular dynamics simulations.
