N2 - This paper examines some key factors that control the birefringence and its wavelength dependence (dispersion) in solvent cast films as pertaining to the optical performance of liquid crystal displays. The birefringence of the cast film is dependent on the intrinsic birefringence of the constituent polymer as well as on conditions prevailing during the drying phase of the casting process. However, the dispersion of birefringence, which controls color shift effects and other spectral characteristics of the display, is strictly a function of the birefringence of the cast film. These results are explained in terms of the Cauchy Equation for the cast polymer.
