Abstract

This paper reviews a recent theory in which the strongly correlated electron system in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is described in terms of weakly interacting composite fermions. It provides trial wavefunctions for all FQHE states. These have the following properties: (i) They provide a very simple way to think about the FQHE. (ii) They have essentially 100% overlap with the exact ground states for few particle systems, (iii) They are the exact ground states of some model Hamiltonians.
